Shop Steward Committee
There will be Shop Stewards elected for a two (2) year term from amongst the Membership. The Shop Stewards will act as Steward for their assigned department/area. The Chief Shop Steward will be Chair of the Shop Steward Committee and will serve as a liaison between the Steward Committee, Bargaining Resource Committee and Grievance Committee.
Terms of Reference
The Stewards shall:
1. Respond to inquiries from fellow Members about their rights and responsibilities under the Collective Agreement.
2. Promote ULFA goals and mandates in the workplace and union consciousness more broadly.
3. Represent the interests of Association Members by assisting the Grievance Committee Chair, staff of the association, and Shop Stewards Chair in identifying and processing the initial stages of grievances, and by acting as an advocate on behalf of Members in grievances, complaints and accompaniments to meetings with a Member’s supervisor.
4. Represent the interests of Association Members by assisting the Bargaining Resource Committee Chair, and ULFA staff in identifying areas of improvement in the Academic Staff Collective Agreement.
5. The Chief Shop Steward will serve on the Association’s Grievance Committee.
6. The Chief Shop Steward will serve on the Association’s Bargaining Resource Committee.
Membership Criteria
Members should be knowledgeable (or interested in becoming knowledgeable) about the collective agreement and applicable legislation.
Ex officio: ULFA President, past Chair where applicable.
Elected: Chair and a minimum of seven (7) members; The Past Chair of the Committee should, if possible, serve ex officio on the Committee.
The Committee shall comprise the following representation, unless sufficient nominees cannot be found from a constituency or constituencies:
a. Chief Shop Steward (any Faculty)
b. 2 from Faculty of Arts and Science (Sciences)
c. 2 from Faculty of Arts and Science (Humanities and Social Sciences)
d. 2 from Faculty of Fine Arts
e. 2 from Faculty of Health Sciences
f. 2 from Dhillon School of Business
g. 2 from Faculty of Education
h. 1 from Calgary Campus
i. 1 from Library
j. General member(s)
k. An Equity Steward who may also sit on the Gender, Equity and Diversity Committee
