SNAC+ proudly presents the recipient of the SNAC+ Award for Excellence in Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion for 2023: Dr. Habiba Kadiri, Associate Professor in the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science! Dr. Kadiri has been a tireless advocate of EDI in her field of Mathematics from international to local levels. As a Co-Principal Investigator of a major PIMS Collaborative Research Group, she is co-organizing workshops and a summer school which incorporate EDI content. In 2022, she published an important article titled, “About the Necessity of Collecting Data to Improve EDI in Mathematics,” in the Canadian Math Society (CMS) Notes. Dr. Kadiri has chaired and served on the CMS EDI committee, is the recipient of an NSERC Discovery Grant, and has supervised numerous students and postdoctoral fellows.

Locally, Dr. Kadiri took a leadership role in her department’s cultural survey, and has since been working with her colleagues in implementing solutions. This January, our colleague shared about her journey in Mathematics through her PUBlic Professor lecture titled, “Resilience in Mathematics,” which offered great insights and inspiration.

Congratulations, Dr. Kadiri! Thank you for all your efforts in advocating on behalf of many individuals and communities! Our thanks to Dr. Caroline Hodes of the Department of Women and Gender Studies for this nomination.

Dr. Kadiri was presented this Award at the opening of the ULFA AGM on Tuesday, April 11, 2023 at 11:00 am in room SA 8002 and via Zoom. We thank those who were able to join us—virtually or in-person–for this special celebration.

Sincerely,

Dr. Saurya Das, Physics and Astronomy
Dr. Gideon Fujiwara, History and Asian Studies
